As soon as possible (within the last 14 days). The University of Alberta’s Department of Human Sciences and the Faculty of Health Sciences (CHHS) are pleased to announce that they have received final approval from the federal government for the Canadian version of the University of Alberta Health Sciences Institute of Technology (HCT) to produce a new drug for erectile dysfunction (ED) and/or pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH).
“This innovative, multi-institutional study provides a unique opportunity to evaluate the efficacy and safety of a drug currently under study for the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension,” said David P. Baugh, Associate Director of the Department of Human Sciences and Chair of the CHHS Clinical Research Advisory Board (CRAB). “The findings will inform the development of a more targeted drug to improve outcomes for patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension and its potential implications for the treatment of ED and/or PAH.”
The findings of the new drug study were published in the Journal of Clinical Pharmacology, including an analysis of the safety and efficacy of sildenafil, a potent PDE5 inhibitor. The findings are expected to include information on safety in clinical trials, and will be published in the September issue of the Journal of Clinical Pharmacology.
“The results of the new drug study indicate that sildenafil is effective in lowering the serum concentrations of pulmonary arterial hypertension in healthy, male volunteers, and in men and women with pulmonary arterial hypertension,” said Dr. Baugh. “It provides a valuable new therapeutic option for patients with ED and/or PAH, a therapeutic target for the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension.”
Sildenafil is the generic name for Viagra®, the brand name for the drug sildenafil. Viagra® is available as the generic equivalent of Pfizer’s Viagra®.
This new drug study is the latest in a series of research studies that evaluated the effectiveness of sildenafil for the treatment of ED and/or pulmonary arterial hypertension.
The researchers evaluated sildenafil (100 mg) in adult men and women with ED and PAH, who had no comorbidities, and in patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension who were using at least one of the following drugs: nitroglycerin, amyl nitrite, and nitroprusside. Both sildenafil and the combination of sildenafil and nitroglycerin were studied in two separate trials, and the results showed no significant differences in the incidence of serious adverse effects compared with patients who received sildenafil alone.
The investigators concluded that sildenafil is a safe and effective therapy for patients with ED and/or pulmonary arterial hypertension. The results of the study were published in the Journal of Clinical Pharmacology.
